Welcome
Foragable is an website (currently in development) facilitating an online community interested in wild food. Having registered, participants email geotagged photographs of their finds, which are then commented upon and confirmed by the community at large. Each individual can see a map of their own finds, but the actual locations will remain private to them (this will always be the default setting. Later in the development process, however, we will introduce the ability to opt-in to sharing finds - with friends, or with the broader community, and with the ability to filter rarer finds.
The community is driven by an 'expertise' (XP) system. Participants earn XP points both by finding foragables (with bonuses for finding rare items, or those in areas no-one has foraged before) and by confirming the finds of others. The purpose of XP is to identify expertise in the community, and in doing so assign more 'weight' to the judgments of these members in confirming finds. We'll eventually operate a leaderboard - but this will be for fun, the main drive is establishing a foraging community.
Further down the development path, I also intend to use the data we generate to produce an online foraging guide. Here, we can draw on EXIM data from the photos to generate seasonality guides (I'm also thinking about tying this to Met Office data on weather), and on the types of location where finds are actually occuring
All of this is for the future, however. You'll probably notice that its pretty nascent at the moment as I get basic functionality up and running. Feel free to join in and play, though. All you need is a camera capable of 'geotagging' photos (i.e. recording their location). Once you've registered, you simply email the photos to submit@foragable.com (using the email you registered with). You can then log in and see your finds, and confirm and comment on those of others (remember, the actual location of your finds will remain private unless you decide to share them).
Important: At the moment, if your find is not 'confirmed' by the community, it will be deleted from the database. Keep a copy of your photos in case you want to resubmit. In the future, this will be improved.
